Crypto Position Size Calculator: Risk, Leverage and Liquidation Price
Leverage is the most misunderstood number in crypto. Your risk is set by two things only: how far your stop is and how big your position is. Leverage only decides how much margin you lock up — and how close liquidation sits.
The formula
- Risk in dollars = account × risk % (for example $1,000 × 1% = $10).
- Position size = risk in dollars ÷ stop distance in % (for example $10 ÷ 0.5% = $2,000).
- Quantity = position size ÷ entry price.
Worked example
Account $5,000, risk 1% = $50. BTC at $80,000, stop at $79,200 — 1% below. Position = $50 ÷ 1% = $5,000, about 0.0625 BTC. At 5× leverage it locks $1,000 of margin; at 20× — $250. The loss at the stop is $50 either way, plus fees and slippage.
Where liquidation comes in
Roughly, liquidation for a long sits near entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance margin). At 20× that is about 4.5% below entry; at 50× under 2%. Keep liquidation well beyond your stop — if liquidation is closer than the stop, the stop is fiction.
Do it on the chart
In the AggPro terminal draw a long or short position (or press “Check a trade”): enter the account and risk % once, and the panel shows position size, quantity, dollars at risk and at the target, plus fees, slippage for that size on the deepest exchange, and funding for a typical holding time.
