From Idea to Tested Strategy Without Code: A Practical Walkthrough
Most trading ideas never get tested because turning them into code takes days. A rule-based builder closes that gap — but only if the rules are precise and the test is honest.
1. Write the idea as one sentence
"Buy pullbacks in an uptrend when buyers step back in" is a good start. It names a context (uptrend), a setup (pullback) and a trigger (buyers return). Vague ideas produce vague rules.
2. Translate each part into a measurable condition
- Context: a trend filter, for example price above a long moving average.
- Setup: a pullback measure, for example an oscillator dipping below a threshold.
- Trigger: confirmation, for example taker buy volume overtaking sells.
Each condition must be true or false on a closed candle — no judgement calls.
3. Decide how you get out
Exits matter as much as entries: a stop loss, a take profit or trailing stop, and optionally a time limit. A strategy without a planned exit is a hope, not a system.
4. Test honestly
- Use data aggregated from many exchanges, with fees, slippage and funding on every trade.
- Fit thresholds on the first part of history and judge the result only on the rest.
- Require enough trades and compare with simply holding the coin.
- Look at the result on each exchange separately: if it only works on one venue, it is probably noise.
5. Expect most ideas to fail
A good builder is valuable precisely because it tells you an idea does not work before you trade it. Iterate: change one condition at a time and keep a record of what you tried.
In the AggPro strategy builder you can describe the idea in words — AI turns it into rules from 120 indicators and runs the honest test on 15 exchanges at once. The first backtests need no sign-up.
